The Highland Park Arts Commission invites visual artists to submit work for WINDOW ART for HIGHLAND PARK 2009. Selected work will hang in the windows of Highland Park businesses and empty storefronts on Raritan Avenue (Route 27). This is a juried exhibit; proposals will be reviewed by a panel of arts professionals. We particularly seek work that is bold and innovative-art that will capture people's attention while walking along Raritan Avenue and make them take a second look at the stores and spaces as they pass by. Although we can't guarantee certain windows or sites, we are very interested in "site-specific" installations.
A complete list of participating storefronts is HERE.
Many artists will choose to submit existing work. However, we are also open to proposed new work (see application directions below). Preference may be given to artists from Highland Park and surrounding communities. We encourage proposals that consider both the opportunites and constraints of public storefront space. In addition, we will consider ideas for performance art that can be presented during the opening reception, Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009. Please note that artists are required to install and take down their work and should be comfortable working with business owners.

This exciting project is the first of what we hope will be an annual event. It will open in conjunction with the Highland Park Arts Commission's 7th annual Open Studios, which runs from 12-5 on Sunday afternoon, October 18. Open Studios always draws many viewers and art lovers from Highland Park and neighboring communities to the downtown area. Raritan Avenue has many popular shops and restaurants that attract pedestrians during both daytime and evening hours. In addition, it is a main route between New Brunswick and Edison.
The 7th annual Open Studio event will take place on October 18th, 12PM - 5PM rain or shine. For information about Open Studios 2009 including registration, view our BROCHURE. Print the brochure, and fill out the appropriate form to register.
